EIN Application Checklist.
The document, identifier, and coordination sequence for obtaining an EIN — including the non-resident path without an SSN.
01 · Prerequisites
- Legal entity name exactly as filed with the state.
- State of formation and formation date.
- Responsible party name and identifier — SSN, ITIN, or foreign identifier.
- U.S. mailing address for IRS correspondence.
02 · Application path
- Responsible party with SSN or ITIN: apply via IRS online EIN assistant.
- Non-resident responsible party without SSN or ITIN: submit Form SS-4 by fax to the IRS International EIN team.
- Never submit Form SS-4 by mail unless there is no alternative; turnaround is measured in months.
03 · On issuance
- Archive CP 575 confirmation letter on receipt.
- If CP 575 is not received within four weeks, request 147C.
- Confirm entity name and EIN match across all downstream registrations.
